July 14th, it was a sunny day, I came to Doumen and took part in “2008 Zhuhai City English Teachers Training Class And Students Summer Camp”. The organizations are American Huntington University and Zhuhai Education Bureau. We spent 3 weeks for learning skills about teaching English and practiced oral English with the American trainers.

At the first day in the camp, the American teachers: Adam, Nancy and Valerie introduced some classroom teaching games called “ice-breakers”. Three of them impressed me.

One game is “Significant Numbers”. A person writes three different numbers on the board or paper. The numbers represent something significant in his\her life. For example, I might write 8, 9 and 26 down . The others must try to guess why these numbers are significant . The number 8 stands for my son’s age, the number 9 is the date of my birthday, the number 26 is the age I got married. I think English teachers can play the games with their students when they learn about “Numbers”. It will arouse the students’  interest  to study English .

The second is “Line-ups”. I think it can be used for learning the names of twelve months. Let me explain the game here. Require some students go to the front of the room. Instruct them to line-up from youngest to oldest. They must ask questions in English. Such as “How old are you?” “When’s your birthday?”, After students finish, then have each one state how old they are. Students also can line-up according to height, weight, etc.

The third is “Bang Bang Vocabulary”. It’s very useful and interesting for the students to learn vocabulary. Why? I will tell you how to play it . Two students come to the front. They are involved in a duel . Get them to pretend to make their pistols with their fingers. A teacher or another student says, “How do you say…” and a word in their mother tongue. The first student to give the answer and then “bang bang”, pretending to shoot his\her opponent is the winner. He\she remains standing and prepares for the next duel .
